A Brief History of the South-West Edinburgh CSH

Established in April 2013 (launched in January 2014), the South-West Edinburgh Community Sport Hub is part of a national project to raise the capacity of sport in Scotland. Community Sport Hubs, sportscotland's contribution to the Scottish Government's 2014 legacy plan, aim to increase the number of people of all ages participating in sport and physical activity in local communities across Scotland.

The geographical areas included in the Hub's remit includes areas such as Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Wester Hailes, Sighthill and Ratho, as well Heriot-Watt University's Riccarton campus which also includes Scotland's Sport Performance Centre, Oriam.

Since the establishment of the CSH, there has been a wide range of impacts on the local community. Along with our 'Hub Impacts' article, the photos below give you an idea some of the key areas of work that the Hub has helped to shape, influence and deliver within South-West Edinburgh.

West Edinburgh Warriors: The Hub identified a gap in the local community for a youth basketball club, and supported the implentation of a new club. The Warriors now have 50+ members, from ages 8 upwards (e-mail westedinburghwarriors@gmail.com for more information)

Coaches: The Hub's Active Community project has seen the recruitment and deployment of over 75 student coaches within the community. If you are a student at Heriot-Watt University, and are keen to get involved with coaching then e-mail SUPresident@hw.ac.uk

Walking Football

Walking Football: The Hub launched walking football in the area, after identifying a need for sports activity for those aged 50+. The sessions started out at Balerno, but now run twice weekly at Oriam (e-mail info@oriam.hw.ac.uk for more information).

The 12 Affiliated CSH Clubs

The initial reason for the introduction of Community Sport Hubs across Scotland was to improve community sport. CSHs were tasked with creating relationships and starting to develop clubs within their respective 'catchment' areas. Currently, the South-West Edinburgh CSH has 12 affiliated clubs, as follows:

Balerno Bowling Club
Currie Chieftains
Currie Football Club
Currie Star Football Club
Dunedin Netball Club
Edinburgh Spirals Trampoline Club
Edinburgh Wrestling Club
Harmeny Athletic Club
Jidel Judo Club
Kingsknowe Hockey Club
Pentland Gymnastics Club
West Edinburgh Warriors Basketball Club

You can find out more information on all of the club's affiliated clubs by visiting the 'Our Clubs' section of the website. Additionally, if your club is based within the South-West Edinburgh and has a growth mind-set, the Hub would love to hear from you!
