Enhancing sport and physical activity provision within South-West Edinburgh

The 4th Annual Community Sports Hub Awards

Heriot-Watt Sports Union’s annual Blues and Volunteers Awards Ceremony took place in Oriam during May, celebrating the transitional year into the world class new facilities on campus.

The event recognised and celebrated the success, commitment and hard work of student athletes, coaches, and volunteers over the last 12 months. The event also hosted the 4th annual Community Sport Hub Awards, recognising the local club and volunteer who have excelled over the past year.

The Community Sport Hub Volunteer of the Year Award was awarded to Marion Milne of Pentland Gymnastics Club. Marion has been involved in the local community for over 20 years through the Girls Brigade, Dean Park Primary and Balerno High School PTAs and the Balerno Community Council. Marion has been a volunteer for the last 15 years with Pentland Gymnastics Club, as an active parent member, fundraiser, coach and committee member. Currently, Marion is the Child Protection Officer for Pentland Gymnastics and a Pupil Support Assistant at Currie Primary School.  A huge well done to Marion and thank you for all her hard work within the community over the past 20 years!

The Community Sport Hub Club of the Year Award was awarded to Edinburgh Spirals Trampoline Club, one of Edinburgh’s finest community clubs. Edinburgh Spirals now has two high level coaches involved in the club, one of them being the only international performance coach in Scotland and their other coach hoping to attain a high-performance qualification very soon. The club operates with a highly efficient governance structure and club committee, who meet every six weeks and contribute very positively to the quarterly Hub Club Forum. Edinburgh Spirals is now working hard to grow its capacity in the near future through upskilling coaches and taking on extra facilities. In the meantime, an active waiting list for all sessions has been established.

Edinburgh Spirals has also enjoyed competitive and development success. In the last year alone, three members have qualified for the British Championships, a young member was accepted into the Scottish Gymnastics Performance Pathway Programme for talented athletes aged 9 to 14, and two young members – both 10 – were invited to join the British Gymnastics Aspiring Talent Development Squad. Congratulations to Edinburgh Spirals on their award and the club’s success over the past year!
